Solarmeter Specifications

Proper usage of Solarmeter Ultraviolet Radiometer for Outdoor UV Index Measurement

The instrumentation used to measure UV index for the U.S. E.P.A./NWS program is directed toward the sky in a global normal (perpendicular to level ground) inclination. Therefore the Solarmeter® Model 6.5 is designed to operate in the same fashion. Solar irradiance measured this way includes direct (reduced by cosine law depending on solar zenith angle) plus diffuse (diffused by the atmosphere).

This vertical (global) reading represents an average intensity value your body will experience while being active on a tennis or volleyball court, or lying flat on a blanket on the grass. If however, you are reclined in a lounge chair facing the sun perpendicular to the sun angle, you will experience a higher UV intensity, as represented by pointing the Solarmeter ® directly at the sun. This value will typically exceed the actual UV index number.

Sensor: Silicon Carbide (SiC) Photodiode under UV glass window, hermetically sealed with Eeff (erythemally effective) filter and diffuser cap.

Solarmeter Model 6.5 Digital Handheld NIST-Traceable UV Index Radiometer with Integral Sensor (01:58)
For complete information about this model, please visit: https://www.solarmeter.com/model65.html Solarmeter's Model 6.5 is the original erythema-effective (Eeff/Ery) meter for measuring UV Index “sun burning rays” from both sun and UV lamps. Its sensor/filter response closely follows the erythema action spectrum (EAS) which enables accurate readings from virtually any UV light sources. The NIST traceable 6.5 has an irradiation range of 0-199.9 microwatts per cm squared UVB and response of 280-400 nanometers, with resolution of 0.1 UV Index and extremely high accuracy of +/-10%. The sensor is a silicon carbide photodiode packaged in a hermetically sealed UV glass window cap. A metal oxide interference filter and diffuser blocks most UVA from response. Typical users include schools / universities, zoos, reptile keepers, and sun-sensitive individuals. This handheld model’s rugged plastic case is palm-sized for effortless portability, measuring a compact 4.2” long x 2.4” wide x 0.9” deep and weighing only 4.5 ounces, including the 9V battery. The battery works down to 6.5VDC before requiring replacement, so it should last approximately 2 years under typical service load. Using this Solarmeter unit is easy. First, unpack it, and store the calibration certificate for your records. Then, remove it from its included carrying case. Finally, simply press and hold the push button switch on the front face of the unit, aim the sensor window on the top panel of the meter directly at the UV source, and note the reading on the 3.5 digit LCD display.
